Generating Consolidated E-way bills

The government mandates e-way bills for goods above Rs 50,000 under section 68 of the GST Act. A registered individual or transporter who transports goods of the consignment may create E-way invoices through the E-way bill portal.

What are Consolidated E-way bills?

A consolidated E-way bill is a single document that records all the information on the E-way bills related to the consignments. This is to ease the confusion for the transporter as he would only require to carry one consolidated E-way bill rather than maintaining multiple E-way bills for various consignors and consignees in one vehicle.

To generate a consolidated E-way bill, you must be a transporter or should generate an E-way bill yourself to access the facility of a consolidated E-way bill.

Prerequisites for generating a Consolidated E-way bill

Some of the Prerequisites required for generating a consolidated E-way bill are:

  1. You should be registered on the E-way bill portal.

  2. You should be in possession of an invoice/bill/Challan related to the consignment of goods.

  3.  You should have a valid Transporter ID or vehicle number when transporting by road.

  4. In the case of transporting through rail, air, or ship, you should have a transporter ID, a transporter document number, and a valid date on the document.

  5. The taxpayer must possess all the individual E-way bill numbers of the consignments to be transported in one conveyance.

Steps to generate a Consolidated E-way bill

The following steps show the way to generate a consolidated E-way bill:

Step 1: Log in to the E-way bill portal and generate individual E-way bills.

Step 2: Select Generate New under the Consolidated EWB option found on the left-hand side of the dashboard.

Step 3: After that, fill in the following details:

  • Select Mode of Transport (Rail/Road/air/Ship)

  • Next, expand the drop-down and select From State

  • Under the Vehicle Start From field, enter the location from where the goods are being transported

  • Next, enter the Vehicle number

  • Then add the EWB number, and the rest of the information will be auto-updated

  • Check the details and then select Submit.

Step 4: After submitting the details, you will be redirected to a page where the E-way bill in form EWB-02 and a 12-digit unique number are generated.

Step 5: Print this by selecting Print Consolidated EWB.

This printed document is then to be carried by the transporter during the shipment of the consignments in the respective conveyance applied for.

Conclusion

E-way bill provisions are effective in interstate and intrastate transactions. Whether the movement of goods is due to supply issues or something else, an E-way Bill must be issued. The E-way Bill regulations mandate a unique number, known as the E-way Bill Number, be obtained from the government's system for every movement of goods satisfying the required conditions. A consolidated E-way bill helps reduce confusion and records the required information in one document.
